Meet the team: Dana Guberina

Now that we have two venues, we find that the Ruby Violet team is busier than ever. Thankfully, our Events & Sales Coordinator is busy coming up with plenty of exciting plans. Here she talks to us about her life, her happiest places and the importance of the perfect gelolly.

What’s the best part of your job?

Meeting and working with really interesting and funny people. The Ruby Violet team constantly bring me to tears with laughing. I’ve worked here since I was 18 (I’m now 21) and the experience has really shaped me into the adult I am now becoming.

What’s the most memorable moment of your career to date?

Ooh, this is a hard one as there are so many! But I would have to say doing the Secret Garden Party in 2014 with our 1968 Austin van, called Billy. The weather was amazing, the people who shared this memory with me were amazing and, most of all, the ice cream was amazing!

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

To never depend on things from others and to depend on yourself, if you want something then you go get it!

What is your earliest memory?

I wouldn’t be able to tell you my earliest memory, but as a child my favourite thing was definitely sailing on my granddad’s boat in Croatia for days, fishing for our dinner, soaking in the hot sun and swimming in the turquoise sea. To this day it’s still my favourite thing to do, I am so honoured to be Croatian and share such amazing family holidays with my brothers in Croatia.

When you aren’t at work, where can we find you?

At a pub having a nice lager or Guinness with friends. The Junction Tavern [on Fortress Road] is one of my favourite pubs along with the Abbey Tavern [on Kentish Town Road]. And if I’m not doing that then I’ll probably be in Rosella on Highgate Road enjoying a classic spaghetti Napoli with added olives. Otherwise, I do enjoy a trip to the Tate and embracing London at its finest!

If you were an ice cream flavour, what would it be?

Now, it’s not about what flavour ice cream I would be, but about what gelolly I would be! Let me introduce my creation of the most beautiful gelolly in the world! This is The Real Lady Marmalade! She’s filled with delicious Seville orange marmalade ice cream then covered in rich chocolate. She also has a chocolate heart at the centre, with vibrant orange candid peel hair. Perfection!

If you could turn any ingredient into an ice cream, what would it be?

This is a hard question because at Ruby Violet we have more than 150 different flavours so I feel like we’ve covered most of them. I think it would be interesting to know what gold tasted like… I bet it’s pretty rich.

Where would you like to live and why?

Well London is quite a hard place to beat but I’ve always liked the idea of living in Ibiza for a few years. I have spent a lot of holidays on the island because my mum’s family lived there, and it has introduced me to the beautiful, calm side of Ibiza that a lot of people wouldn’t believe exists! Otherwise, I’d love to retire either in the good old British countryside or in Croatia on the Dalmation coast – stunning.

What is your favourite sound or smell?

Either the sound of hot water being poured into a cup to brew some tea or the pop of the cork when opening a bottle of prosecco, they’re both excellent sounds. My favourite smell has to be cooking food – whatever it is.

Complete the sentence: a world without ice cream…

… would be dull.
